Nutrition Tip No.2
VISUAL SIGNS AND CLUES
(This tip was also subsequently published in the
January 2007 edition of 'Zest' magazine.)
-
Nail
condition - white
spots on the
fingernails often means that a person is likely to be deficient in
zinc. Zinc is one of the nutrients that are vital for nail
health and can be found in shellfish and certain seeds &
nuts. Brittle, split or flaking nails
indicate possible low levels of stomach acid, which is needed
for the release of minerals from food during digestion. Low
dietary intake of foods rich in omega-3 and omega-6, may lead to
poor nail condition, as these essential fats that are important
for the maintenance of healthy nails.
-
Diagonal earlobe crease
-
this can be an indicator of potential cardiovascular problems.
The earlobe contains a large number of blood vessels, and one of
the main components of these is collagen. The earlobe crease is
a sign that the blood vessel walls have collapsed (due to
decreased blood flow) or that the
collagen is damaged or depleted. If this is going on in the
ears, it may also be occurring in the arteries.
-
Dark circles under the eyes
- this points to
a
possible food sensitivity/intolerance, or even that the liver
and/or kidneys are being overburdened by toxins. A
individual’s diet, lifestyle, toxicity levels and possible food
intolerances, would all need to be assessed in order to
determine the root cause of the problem.
-
Dry, cracked lips -
suggest a deficiency in vitamin B2, which is required for the
healthy mucous membranes which form the moist, protective lining
of the mouth and digestive tract.
-
Keep an eye on your complexion -
the skin is often referred to as the ‘third kidney’ as it
supports the liver and kidneys as an organ of elimination,
acting as a further route for the removal of toxins from the
body. If your complexion is spotty, greasy or dry, then this is
a sign that toxins are being eliminated through the skin,
affecting skin condition, blocking the pores etc. For a fresh
healthy complexion, eat plenty of fresh healthy foods,
especially fruit and vegetables. Drink at least 1.5
to 2 litres of water daily.
